Saint Petersburg's climate is one of strong contrasts. It is affected by air masses coming off the Atlantic Ocean and by polar continental air, which in winter is very dry and cold. Saint Petersburg has cold winters, with temperatures in January averaging -10° C (14° F); the summers are generally warm, with the temperature in July averaging 20° C (69° F). Sunshine lasts from May to September.

And don't forget about the city's so-called "White nights" (May 15 - July 1) when the sun doesn't set and nights are bright as days. During "White nights" St.Petersburg is full of habitants and guests, walking all night long. It seems that nobody is sleeping! Unbelievable meetings may occur during that time. Restaurants, bars and clubs are opened the whole night.

In summertime almost all bridges is St.Petersburg are raised in the nights to allow ships to sail up the rivers from the Baltic Sea. Thousands of people come to watch these raisings. The sight is really enthralling!
